Why I Do What I Do – The Heart Behind Weeping Willow Photography

For as long as I can remember, I’ve been drawn to photography—not just the technical side of it, but the emotional magic it holds. A photo can freeze a moment in time, capture a feeling, and tell a full story without a single word. That’s what hooked me 20 years ago, and it’s what still drives me today.

I officially took the leap and went full-time with my photography business 10 years ago. At the time, it felt a little scary, but it also felt exactly right. I named my business Weeping Willow Photography because I’ve always found something poetic about the way a willow tree moves—strong, grounded, but full of grace and emotion. That’s how I want my photography to feel.

My work focuses on weddings, families, and newborns—life’s most joyful and intimate chapters. These are the moments that matter. These are the chapters we want to remember in vivid detail. Being able to preserve them for people is such an honor. It never feels like just a job. It feels like purpose.

I’m a wife, a mom of three incredible boys (ages 6, 9, and 12), and an animal lover—we share our home with a dog, a cat, and a bird who keeps things interesting. My husband is also in the arts, so our home is filled with creativity, music, nature, and a whole lot of love. These parts of my life fuel my work. They remind me daily of what matters, and why I’m so passionate about helping others capture their stories.

This year, I opened The Lens Lounge at Langlab, a creative rental space for other photographers. It’s a dream come true—because while I absolutely love capturing moments myself, I also love helping other creatives grow. Building community, sharing knowledge, and watching other photographers step into their own light brings me so much joy.

I believe success doesn’t come from being the best. It comes from being passionate, open to growth, and deeply connected to why you started in the first place. For me, my "why" is clear:

  • I do what I do to help people remember their happiest days.

  • To preserve the laughter of their children before they grow up.

  • To show the bond between two people saying “I do.”

  • To help other creatives find their own version of success.

  • To keep learning, keep growing, and keep focusing on the joys in life.

That’s what Weeping Willow Photography is all about.

Thank you for being part of my journey. Whether you’re here as a client, a fellow photographer, or just someone curious about my “why,” I’m so glad you’re here.

With love and light,

Kayla Holdread/Scarberry
