What to Wear for Spring Family Photos in Northern Indiana

Spring sessions are some of my absolute favorites to photograph. The fresh greenery, soft light, and warmer weather create such a beautiful backdrop for family photos.

But if you live in Northern Indiana, you know one thing for sure: spring weather can be unpredictable. One day it’s sunny and 65 degrees, and the next day it’s chilly and windy.

Because of that, layers are your best friend when planning outfits for spring photos. They not only keep everyone comfortable but also add beautiful texture and variety to your images.

Here are some simple tips to help you plan outfits that will photograph beautifully and make your session stress-free.

Choose Soft Spring Color Palettes

Spring photography tends to look best with light, natural, and soft tones. These colors complement the season and photograph beautifully outdoors.

Some of my favorite color palettes for spring sessions include:

• Soft neutrals like cream, beige, and light gray• Pastels such as sage green, dusty blue, blush pink, and lavender• Earthy tones like tan, olive, and muted rust

These colors feel timeless and allow the focus to stay on your family instead of the clothing.

Layers Are Perfect for Northern Indiana Weather

Because spring temperatures can shift quickly, layers are a great option.

Think about pieces like:

• Light cardigans• Denim jackets• Sweaters• Shawls or wraps for moms• Button-up shirts for dads

Layers not only help everyone stay comfortable, but they also create visual depth and texture in your photos.

Another bonus? Layers can easily be removed if the temperature warms up during your session.

Coordinate Instead of Matching

One of the biggest myths about family photos is that everyone needs to wear the exact same color. Instead, I recommend coordinating outfits rather than matching.

Start with one outfit you love (often mom’s outfit) and build everyone else’s looks around that color palette.

For example:

  • Mom in a flowy cream dress

  • Dad in a light blue button-up

  • Kids wearing soft neutral tones that complement both

When colors complement each other without being identical, the photos feel more natural and visually interesting.

What to Avoid Wearing

While most outfits can work, there are a few things I recommend avoiding for photos:

• Large logos or graphics• Bright neon colors• Very busy patterns• Clothing with lots of text

These elements can be distracting in photos and take attention away from your family.

Tips for Dressing Kids Comfortably

Kids always photograph best when they feel comfortable and confident.

A few tips that help:

• Choose clothes they can move easily in• Avoid stiff fabrics or anything itchy• Bring a backup layer if it's chilly• Let them wear something they feel good in

If kids feel comfortable, they’re much more likely to relax, play, and give those genuine smiles we all love in photos.

When in Doubt, Keep It Simple

The best outfits for family photos are usually simple, coordinated, and comfortable.

Soft colors, a few layers, and clothing that allows everyone to move freely will create photos that feel natural, timeless, and full of connection.

And if you're ever unsure about what to wear, I'm always happy to help! Many of my clients send outfit photos ahead of time so we can make sure everything works together beautifully.
