Seasonal Photography Ideas for Every Month

One of the questions families ask most is simply: when should we book? The honest answer is that Northern Indiana gives us something photographable in every single month, and the best time depends on the mood you want on your walls. Here is my month-by-month field guide to the year around South Bend and Michiana, drawn from photographing this landscape through every season.

Winter: January and February

Quiet, moody and underrated. Fresh snow turns familiar parks into clean, minimal backdrops, and cozy in-home sessions shine, especially for newborns and toddlers. Deep winter is also the smart season to plan ahead: fall weekends book out first every year.

Early spring: March and April

March is the in-between month, honest and bare, better for moody couples portraits than pastel family sessions. By mid-April the first blossoms arrive and everything softens. Overcast April days produce some of the most flattering light of the year.

Late spring: May

Blossoms, fresh green and comfortable temperatures. May is prime time for family sessions and for maternity portraits before summer heat arrives. Mother’s Day minis usually happen now for good reason.

Outdoor family session in seasonal Michiana light

Summer: June through August

Long evenings, beach light on Lake Michigan, golden fields and barefoot energy. Summer earns its own love letter, which I wrote in why summer works so beautifully for family photos in South Bend. One practical note: we schedule summer sessions for the last two hours before sunset, when the light turns to honey and the heat lets go.

Early fall: September

Golden grasses, warm evenings, green still hanging on. September is the connoisseur’s month, all of autumn’s warmth without the calendar crunch of October.

Peak fall: October

Peak color usually lands mid-to-late October around Michiana, and it books out earlier every year. If your heart is set on red and gold maples, reserve your date by late summer. Fall family minis fill fastest of all, so ask about upcoming minis early.

November

The first half often keeps its color and offers moody, beautiful light with easier scheduling. Late November brings bare-branch minimalism that suits dramatic couples portraits and cozy at-home sessions.

December

Holiday studio minis, twinkle lights, pajama sessions at home and snow days when we are lucky. December photographs are the ones that end up on next year’s holiday cards, so think one year ahead.

So when should you book?

Booking lead times by season

Timing your inquiry matters as much as timing your session. Fall sessions, particularly October weekends, should be booked by mid to late summer. Spring and summer sessions generally want six to ten weeks of lead time. Winter and early spring are the easiest months to book on shorter notice. Holiday minis are typically announced in early autumn and fill within days, so joining the mini session list well ahead is the only reliable way to catch them.

Planning around your own milestones

Rather than choosing a month in the abstract, work backward from what is happening in your family. A baby due in March suggests maternity portraits in January and newborn photographs in early spring. A child starting kindergarten in the fall makes late summer meaningful. A grandparent visiting in July makes July the right answer regardless of what the light is doing. Photographs anchored to real moments matter more than photographs anchored to peak foliage.

Building an annual rhythm

Many families settle into a pattern once they see how quickly children change: a full session once a year in a season they love, plus a shorter mini session six months later. Others photograph every two years and let the change between sessions be more dramatic. Either works. What does not work is waiting for a year when everyone will be at a convenient age, because that year does not arrive.

Weather realism for each season

Spring is wet and unpredictable, so build in a backup date. Summer is hot at midday and prone to evening storms, so we shoot late. Fall is the most reliable stretch of the year here, which is part of why it books out. Winter is genuinely cold and occasionally unusable, so in-home and studio options matter. Knowing this in advance keeps a rescheduled session from feeling like a setback.

What about golden hour in each season?

The best light window shifts substantially across the year. In June that window is roughly 7:30 to 9:15 in the evening. In October it lands closer to 5:45 to 6:45. In December it can be finished before 5:00. This is why session times vary so much through the year, and why an evening session in June and an evening session in December are entirely different plans.

Match the season to your family’s energy: beach families belong in summer, cozy families in winter, classic families in May, September or October. Whatever you choose, the portfolio shows how each season actually photographs here. When you find the mood that feels like yours, send an inquiry and we will find the date.
