The first year of a baby’s life moves faster than any other season of family life. One month you are watching tiny kicks ripple across your belly. A blink later there is cake smashed on the floor and a one-year-old learning to wave. Bump to Baby photography exists so the whole arc gets remembered, not just the newborn week, and this guide explains how the experience works and why families love documenting the year as one continuous story.
The four chapters worth keeping
Maternity
Most families schedule maternity portraits between 28 and 34 weeks, when the bump is beautifully present and you are still comfortable moving around. Golden fields, waterfalls and studio sessions all work. I will help you plan timing, location and what to wear.
Newborn
Calm, baby-led sessions at home or in the studio during those first sleepy weeks. No rigid posing, no pressure, feeding breaks always welcome. If a home session appeals to you, my guide to preparing for an at-home newborn session walks through everything.
Milestones
Somewhere around sitting age, personality arrives in full color: gummy smiles, first teeth, determined little hands. Milestone sessions preserve the in-between stages that pass the fastest and are the easiest to forget.
First birthday
A playful celebration of the whole year, and of who your baby is becoming. Some families keep it simple and classic, others go full cake smash. Both are wonderful.

Why booking the journey together helps
New parents have enough to remember. When the year is planned as one experience, you never have to think about scheduling the next chapter, because it is already on the calendar. Your baby grows up in front of a photographer they have known from the very beginning, which shows in how relaxed the sessions feel. And there is an artistic benefit too: consistent light, editing and storytelling across the year, so your gallery reads as one continuous story rather than a collection of one-off shoots.
What the experience includes
Rather than listing packages here, I would rather have a conversation about your family, because every Bump to Baby journey is a little different: some families want all four chapters, others want to start with maternity and decide as they go. Sessions can happen in the studio, at home or outdoors around South Bend and Michiana, and every chapter ends with a thoughtfully edited gallery. The Bump to Baby page walks through each stage in more detail.
Common questions
What if baby arrives early or late? We flex. Newborn timing always follows your baby, not the calendar. Can siblings join? Please yes. Do you photograph motherhood moments too? Absolutely. Some of my favorite frames are simply a mama and her baby in quiet light.
Timing each chapter
Maternity portraits generally land between 28 and 34 weeks, when the bump is clearly present and you are still comfortable walking and standing. Earlier than 26 weeks and it often does not read in photographs; much past 36 and comfort becomes the limiting factor.
Newborn sessions traditionally happen in the first two to three weeks, though there is nothing wrong with four or five. Milestone sessions usually cluster around sitting age, roughly six to eight months, when babies can hold themselves up but are not yet crawling away mid-frame. First birthday sessions happen anywhere from eleven to thirteen months.
What if the timeline slips?
It frequently does, and it is fine. Babies arrive early. NICU stays happen. Illness moves things. Nothing about this journey requires hitting exact weeks, and I would rather photograph a relaxed family at nine weeks than a stressed one at two.
Studio, at home, or outdoors
Each stage suits different settings. Maternity often works best outdoors in evening light or in the studio for something more editorial. Newborn sessions are usually at home or in the studio, depending on your light and preference. Milestones do well anywhere, including outdoors once a baby can sit. First birthdays split between studio cake smashes and outdoor sessions in warm weather.
Including siblings, partners and grandparents
A first baby and a fourth baby produce very different sessions, and the fourth is not less worthy of documenting. Older siblings can join for a portion of any session. Grandparents who are present in a child’s first year deserve to be in the photographs from it. Tell me who matters and we will build them in.
What you actually end up with
By the end of the year you have four galleries that read as one story: the waiting, the arrival, the becoming, and the first milestone. Families tell me the value of that only becomes fully clear later, when the baby is five and the whole first year exists in one continuous visual record rather than a scattering of phone photos.
The smallest seasons move the fastest. If you are expecting, or holding a brand-new little one right now, send an inquiry and tell me where you are in the journey. I will help you figure out the rest.
